How does a dentist treat snoring and sleep apnea?Sometimes people are surprised to learn that a dentist can alleviate their sleeping and breathing problems. While there are many different types of specialists who treat Sleep Disordered Breathing, oral appliance therapy can be an effective alternative. An oral mouthguard appliance made by a dentist can work by repositioning the lower jaw and moving the tongue forward, opening up the airway while sleeping. These custom-made oral appliances look similar to custom nighttime mouthguards but are much thinner in diameter. Oral appliances (mouthguards) have proven effective in clinical tests for the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea. They also fit in the mouth comfortably and are easy to wear! For some people with sleep apnea, a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) unit is traditionally used to help regulate breathing problems while sleeping. While these machines are effective for people with severe sleep apnea, they are physically uncomfortable, noisy and cumbersome. In fact, 80% of CPAP users stop using the device after one year. In many cases, a customized dental mouthguard (oral appliance) can be a safe, effective, and comfortable alternative to a CPAP unit! At Sleep Well Centres, our sleep clinic dentists have specialized training in snoring and sleep apnea therapy as well as extensive knowledge of the anatomy of the mouth and nose. If you have already used a CPAP unit, or had one prescribed to you, there may be an alternative. Our dentists can tell you if oral appliance therapy is a more comfortable solution for you. If you've ever wished "No More CPAP!", then we may be able to make your wish come true. Contact Sleep Well Centres today! Click here to read more about our doctors Do you have snoring problems?
